The Stories are just that for Klingons

800 years later the saga of Kahless was just a tale to inspire the Klingons. Thats ultimately what we learned in this weeks Episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Though the lens of the episode is through the eyes of cadet Jay-Den, the surrounding B plot gives us in "Vox in Excelso"...Its actually a mirror to Starfleet. Klingons' are near extinction, as is the Federation.

So in the opening of the show we have a debate class, as part of Starfleet is negotiation and solving issues verbally. Its not always about the pew pews. Which we find sends our Jay-Den into a panic! I was worried the makeup would come apart his face was so wet. (note my buddy Jase, hated the way he spoke, he felt like he was an emphysematous patient). Well, at the same time we learned that Caleb knows all the regulations as a good prisoner would. With this he wins all the debates in class. As Jay-Den sort of comes apart, Caleb looks to be the hero and help him out, not understanding how stubborn some Klingons can be.

Now in flashback storytelling we learn of the near demise of the Empire and how the burn ripped the once mighty Aliens to nothing. We learn of Jay-Den's poly family lifestyle{but still not of if his brother is by which father brother} and his mom. Who technically was a healer. So Jay-Den does not want to be the typical Warrior he wants to heal and learn science. While most of us earthlings reading this will say well nothing wrong with that, in the that society its not well received.

SO we learn about a right of passage that his father was displeased with his choices or so we thought. We skip to a night of drinking as Dadmiral Vance, wants to get the Klingons on a planet so that their species can survive again. Of course the Klingons wont take a handout. So our Captain meets with the Klingon Obel -sort of the high council leader- and after much drinking(a bit of romance, cuz they totally hooked up), the plan was clear. Klingons have to take the planet in GLORY! AAARR.

This brings me back to the beginning of my writing here. The facade of glory isn't what it's cracked up to be. In the thick of if it, the showcase of anger that the father portrayed was his way of showing his son he understood his choices. Obel showcasing strength and honor, despite there not being an actual battle, shows the other Klingons that they are still a power in the universe. Lastly the story of Kahless was more than likely a fake and an exaggeration. Meaning the past is not as glorious as it was written. Yes friends let go of what you know and enjoy the long planned story of Starfleet reunification. Its not a bad thing, we have seen this in Vulcan form three times in the past 20 years so lets see things after Discovery gave a look at how it came a part lets see how they put it together. Captain Burnham was doing some of the lifting in season 4 and 5. Lets have the cadets showcase the details. Some of which I am going to be sure will not be as defined as a straight line.

To me Jay-Den is a great character(Karim is a great actor), and we needed this to understand why he became a cadet. We got a closer connection with the school jock and Jay-den. He and Genesis as well as Caleb. These are the foundations of the reasons we loved the crews of star trek shows past. Moments of power and strength through loss, getting up from the ruin of your society to build a new and better one. We have a lot of world building to do for the show, and sadly only 10 episodes. It may seem rushed but in the long run more people have enjoyed this episode than not. More people have related to not fulfilling the destiny that the family desired. They are working on their own paths, this was a great reflection for us to follow. As the show progresses I am curious as to what other former federation ally's we will get an update on.
